Every September, National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) reminds us that democracy starts with participation. On September 16, 2025, New Yorkers joined millions nationwide in registering voters, checking their status, and preparing for the upcoming General Election in November.
In a city of more than 8 million, there are thousands of unregistered voters. National Voter Registration Day is our city's chance to close that gap before Election Day and make sure every borough is represented.
Why National Voter Registration Day Matters for NYC’s 2025 Election
This November, New Yorkers will head to the polls to choose leaders who will shape the city’s future for years to come. Local elections have a great impact deeply felt citywide.
Decisions made by elected officials influence housing and affordability, public safety, education, and transportation that millions rely on every day.
National Voter Registration Day ensures that every eligible voter has the chance to register and make their voice heard when it counts most.
When Is National Voter Registration Day 2025?
Since its launch in 2012, NVRD has grown into America’s largest nonpartisan civic holiday. Thousands of organizations, volunteers, and community groups host events across the country, working together to register voters and raise awareness about civic engagement.

1665: NYC’s first municipal election was held.
-
1965: The Voting Rights Act expanded access in communities across Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan.
